It’s Arsenal travelling again, so but obviously it’s a match we can’t take for granted even if it’s against league strugglers Huddersfield, especially after slipping down to 6th in the points table and with fellow top-four hopeful Manchester United showing no signs of stopping in their dream run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Unai Emery has been vocal about Arsenal’s woeful away from, even claiming it’s more a “mental issue” than anything else, and to be honest he’s right. Arsenal seems like they’re just not confident enough when playing on opposition’s turf.
Analysing Arsenal’s previous performances again the league strugglers, it’s more been the bottom sides bullying them in their half with high pressing and physical play backed up by some real solid defensive structure which has been the primary reason for them not dominating such matches. We’re allowed to dictate possession, but coming into the final third, we only score goals because of either an opposition’s mistake or some scintillating moments produced by theLaca -Auba’s striking partnership. And the reason is that Arsenal’s creating house , which lately comprises Alex Iwobi, Mattéo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey (to an extent) hasn’t been able to deliver, now the issue has been that except Ramsey none of them can really create defence-splitting passes on a consistent basis or to really create a fear in opposition’s defence just by their reputation, as Matteo plays more like a deep-lying playmaker, hence he relies largely on the long balls to create chances, while Alex Iwobi does fit perfectly to Emery’s system, his work rate is good, he traces backs more often than not and he’s quick, but let’s accept it, that guy just doesn't have the final third quality. So that leaves you with pretty much Ramsey to create all the chances, that too given he’s playing, and when you’re playing with just one creative centre, the probability is that he’s going to be choked by the opposition, especially by the physical-play loving bottom teams.
Now instead if we can play with a back four, with Lucas Torreira and Mattéo Guendouzi in the central midfield, and Aubameyang and Denis Suarez on the flanks, you are giving enough cover to Arsenal’s vulnerable full-backs, especially on the right, Suarez canbe expected to trace back hard and then pump forward when In possession, or he can even play as a central midfielder when in possession which would let Torreria or Guenduzi to shift on the left a little giving more width and also more cover on the left flank with Kolasinac exploring opposition’s territory consistently, while also allowing the only thing Lichtsteiner looks comfortable doing, pushing forward like a wing back. And with all the bases covered, we can now afford to drop Mesut Ozil in the midfield as No.10, and let him do what he does best , which is creating chances, something Arsenal really needs.
For all the tactical understanding and gameplans that a manager put into matches in the modern era football, Emery for once just need to keep it simple and let all the world-class attacking talent at his disposal do what they do best. There’s no better way to sink a ship then creating holes in it. Go out, attack-score-repeat. Let’s show some of Wenger’s Arsenal out there, it is still some of the best-attacking styles of football you would cross across. And believe me, if you give that “Lazy Old” German some freedom and confidence, he can still make it happen, there’s a reason he’s the fastest to 50 assists in the premier league history.
