Sorry Emery, You Were Wrong!

This is Arsenal's lineup for the match against WestHam United, Leno; Sokratis, Koscielny, Mustafi; Maitland-Niles, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Kolasinac; Iwobi; Aubameyang, Lacazette
Subs: Cech, Bellerin, Lichtsteiner, Monreal, Torreira, Ramsey, Nketiah

And this is Unai Emery's post-match comments on team selection and Özil's exclusion,

"I decided the players I think are the best for this match. We win with him, we lose with him. I think it is not one player (Mesut Ozil) we can't win or lose."
"The players who were here are the players who deserved to be in this match," added Emery after watching Arsenal losing another match on the road, hence only picking up two points out of the last fifteen possible when the gunners have played away from the Emirates.

Now I have a lot of time and respect for the Master tactician from Spain, but how can you have five fullbacks (two in the first team and three starting on the bench) in your squad while you leave one of the best No.10 in the world out, and still believe it’s the best possible team to field. Now I know there is a lot of critics of Mesut Ozil, but I really don’t understand why he didn’t even make the bench today, all Arsenal was begging for most of the match was a quality defence-opening pass from somewhere for Auba and Laca to finish off. And for all the cries of Ozil not being a big match-player, Emery has gone a level better and dropped him for a match against a mid-table side. I know I may be repeating myself here, but it’s just baffling to see Arsenal struggling on the pitch and thinking about why on earth is Ozil is not even in the Squad.

Mesut Ozil
Now when you keep a playmaker like Mesut Ozil out of the Squad, you can at least be expected to play the other one, but Emery decided not to do it, Sadly. Ramsey was only introduced in the 58th minute, and his impact was evident immediately, though even he couldn’t turn the fixture around for his soon to be the former club, maybe perhaps he could be the missing block in those early 10-15 minutes of the match when Arsenal was really knocking West Ham’s defence hard.

Bringing on Bellerin and Torreria, a full back and a defensive midfielder was a surprising call. Especially when your team is one down and no way even close to scoring. It ended up being an infective decision from a substituting genius like Emery. But again there weren’t any real attacking options on the bench except Ramsey and Eddie Nketiah, an exciting talent but nevertheless unproven equity in the Premier League. Hence the only way Unai Emery can justify his substitution, but sadly he is the one who handicapped himself and Arsenal.

Being honest, you can’t expect too much from Emery in the current scenario with all those injuries and Kroenke’s stubbornness about not investing for which Emery had to rule any permanent signings for the January window, last week. But perhaps this was a match which Arsenal could have won or should have won if Emery would have used his resources well enough.

And for relations between Emery and Ozil, they’re only going one way by every week. Some theories say Emery is scared about the “Neymar Effect” that Mesut Ozil could cause at Arsenal, and if this claim has any truth in it, then Unai needs to hear three big words, “Put Arsenal First”, and the matter of the fact is that Arsenal NEEDS Ozil and Ramsey until their replacements are signed.

Unai Emery
But Unai Emery has done enough for us to not go back to Arsene Wenger’s chants again. He’s here, and he’s proved that he can make it happen. Let’s give him the time and pray that Kroenke backs him in the summer. And I’m sure Arsenal are getting back on track against Chelsea next week, given Emery gets his team right this time around.
